Welcome to Sussex Professional Golfers Union (SPGU), a top golf club located in Eastbourne. Established in 1912, SPGU was created to provide club professionals and their assistants with the opportunity to compete in Sussex alongside supportive amateurs. With an impressive track record of hosting over 20 events annually, involving more than 40 professionals and over 500 amateurs, SPGU is the ultimate destination for young professionals looking to develop their skills and embark on a successful career as tour professionals.
One of the highlight events of the SPGU calendar is the SPGU-Interlagos Order of Merit, which showcases the incredible talents of our members. The 2024 edition saw Chris Croucher clinching the well-deserved victory, with George Goddard securing the second spot and James Sharp finishing in third place.
Behind every successful club lies a dedicated team, and SPGU is no exception. Led by Secretary Charles Giddins from Willingdon Golf Club, our team comprises esteemed individuals who are passionate about golf. President Leslie Watts, hailing from West Hove Golf Club, guides us with his wisdom and experience, while Mark Root of Chartham Park Golf Club dutifully serves as our Chairman. The Amateur Captain position is held by Phil Dobson from Highwoods Golf Club, while Professional Captain James Doswell represents Piltdown Golf Club.
Additionally, we are honoured to have Mike Wood as our Starter, Chris Spencer as the SPGU Head Referee, Lea Cooper as the Past Professional Captain from Tilgate Forest Golf Centre, and Chris Spencer as the Past Amateur Captain from Piltdown Golf Club.
