Are proud to be a part of the Sussex Iaido Club, based in Sompting, West Sussex. The club was founded by Andrew Thrower Sensei and Nick Bland Sensei in August 2000, with the guidance and teachings of John Honisz-Greens Sensei.
Andrew Thrower Sensei began his martial arts journey in 1996, as a student of the late Gerd Kroell Sensei at the Tai Gyoku Ryu Aikido and Aikijujutsu dojo. It was during this time that he crossed paths with John Honisz-Greens Sensei at various Aikijujutsu seminars in East Sussex. Inspired and encouraged by Kroell Sensei, Andrew and Nick turned their focus to Iaido in 2000, becoming dedicated students of Honisz-Greens Sensei.
Initially, the club's first dojo was situated in Eastbourne, East Sussex. However, in June 2009, Andrew opened the second Sussex Dojo in Sompting, West Sussex. Since then, the Sussex Dojo has experienced significant growth, attracting numerous dedicated members. The club actively participates in regional and national iaido competitions in the UK, showcasing their skills and commitment to the art.
Sussex Iaido Club prides itself on its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The dojo accommodates practitioners of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced individuals holding dan ranks. Andrew Thrower Sensei, currently holding the rank of Godan (5th Dan) in Iaido, passed his grade on his first attempt in July 2016. He is also a Level 1 coach, continuously honing his skills and working towards his Rokudan (6th Dan) under the guidance of Honisz-Greens Sensei.
While Iaido is predominantly practised as a non-contact martial art, focused on solo kata against imaginary opponents, there are also forms that involve pair-work with wooden swords (bokuto). The art form requires controlled and precise movements, emphasising mental presence and immediate reaction. Studying Iaido goes beyond the physical forms, delving into the intricacies and philosophy of the traditional Japanese art.
As a non-profit martial arts club, the Sussex Iaido Club aims to promote and practise the art of Iaido throughout the UK. Their dedication to the art is evident in their commitment to continuous learning, participation in competitions, and opportunities for members to train in Japan. The club's website offers more information and welcomes inquiries via email or Facebook.
