Sumner Surf Life Saving Club Inc

Welcome to Sumner Surf Life Saving Club Inc. Brent, the organiser, would like to share a bit about this dedicated group of volunteers who have been preventing drownings on the beaches of Christchurch for over 100 years. Established in 1911, Sumner SLSC is a cornerstone of the Sumner community, committed to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all beachgoers.

Brent highlights that the club is powered by a diverse group of volunteers of all ages, united by a common goal of promoting safe beach and surf environments. A key part of this commitment is the volunteer weekend patrol service, running during summer from mid-November to the end of March. These patrols are crucial in keeping the beaches safe and are made possible by the dedication of the club members.

Fostering water safety awareness from a young age is another priority for Brent and the club. The Junior Surf Programme, catering to children aged seven to 14, is a notable success. With about 150 junior members, they proudly hold the title of Junior South Island Champions in both open water and pool events. At age 14, these juniors transition into the senior part of the club, receiving training from exceptional instructors to become the next generation of lifeguards.

Brent also emphasises that training at Sumner SLSC doesn’t end there. The club offers comprehensive lifeguard training programmes, including intermediate, advanced, and specialised modules such as rock climbing, board skills, and VHF radio operation. There are also opportunities for those interested in operating Inflatable Rescue Boats, with crewperson and driver awards available.

In addition to lifeguarding, club members are skilled athletes who participate in the Surf Life Saving New Zealand competition calendar. Brent points out that the club values not just patrolling and training but also enjoying the sport and camaraderie that the surf environment offers. Members support each other during competitions and while enjoying the waves together.
