HISTORY INFORMATION 2020 CHALLENGE SUKONA KARATE Sukona Karate is a well-established martial arts club located in Darlington, North East England. Founded in June 1992, Sukona Karate primarily focuses on Shotokan Karate, but also incorporates various other martial arts styles into its training regimen.
At Sukona Karate, students have the opportunity to learn and master a range of martial arts techniques, including Shaolin Lohan, Swanda Karate, Kobudo (Weapons), and Atemi-Jutsu. This diverse approach to training ensures that students benefit from a well-rounded martial arts education.
The club offers a variety of classes throughout the week to cater to different age groups and skill levels. On Mondays, there are two classes, starting from 9:30am with Tai Chi at Holy Family Parish Centre on Prior Street in Darlington, and then juniors and seniors training at St. Mary's Church Hall in Cockerton from 6:45pm to 9:15pm.
Tuesdays feature a class for both juniors and seniors at Barton Village Hall on Silver Street in Barton, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. On Wednesdays, juniors train from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, followed by seniors from 7:30pm to 9:00pm, both at St. Mary's Church Hall in Cockerton, Darlington.
Thursday mornings start with a Tai Chi class from 9:30am to 10:30am at Holy Family Parish Centre on Prior Street. Fridays are designated as rest days with no karate lessons scheduled. Saturdays, however, offer a class for juniors and seniors at Hamsterly Village Hall in Hamsterly from 10:30am to 11:30am, followed by another class for juniors and seniors at Wolviston Community Centre in Wolviston from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Sundays are rest days with no karate lessons.
Sukona Karate also organises several events throughout the year to enhance the training experience of its members. In February, there is a Kata Course held at St. Mary's Church Hall in Cockerton, Darlington, which focuses on different levels of katas throughout the day. March sees the Gradings event take place at the same venue, followed by a Karate Party at Holy Family Parish Centre in March.
June is marked by another Kata Course at St. Mary's Church Hall, with different levels of katas being taught. July is dedicated to Gradings at St. Mary's Church Hall, and August offers a Kids Summer Course at the same venue.
September features the Gashuku event in Redcar, which is an overnight weekend event for further training and development. November brings the third Kata Course of the year at St. Mary's Church Hall, followed by Gradings at the end of the month. Finally, in December, Dan Gradings take place at Mary's Church Hall, allowing higher-level students to progress to the next level.
