St Vincent Bowling Club, located in Glasgow, is a renowned lawn bowls club with a rich history and a thriving community. The club takes its name from Saint Vincent, a deacon and martyr. According to legend, St Vincent was born in Huesca, Spain, and was ordained into the church during a time of persecution. After being arrested and thrown into prison in Valencia, he endured torture until the angels visited him, providing relief and converting his warders to Christianity.
The club, which was established on April 4th, 1859, originally functioned as a bowling and curling club. However, in March 1878, the curling club disbanded, and their gold medallion was graciously gifted to the bowling club. This medallion was skilfully remodelled, and gold links were added to create the President's chain of office. Each link of the chain is engraved with the President's name and year of office.
Curling stones can still be found around the club grounds, serving as a reminder of the club's historical connexion to the sport.
In 1970, a new clubhouse was opened at the club. The opening ceremony was officiated by The Right Honourable Lord Provost of Glasgow, Donald R. Liddle. To commemorate this significant occasion, a plaque was placed in the main entrance of the clubhouse.
