Bowling Club, located in Unley, South Australia, is a renowned and historic club that has been in existence since 1903. Situated at the south-western end of Unley Oval on Trimmer Terrace, Sturt Bowling Club is the oldest club on its existing site in the region. The club takes great pride in its rich history and is considered one of the most iconic clubs in the area.
Sturt Bowling Club is actively involved in the Bowls SA Metropolitan Pennant competition, with 6 sides competing on Saturdays, 4 on Wednesdays, and 2 in the women's competition on Thursdays. In total, Sturt Bowling Club has won 68 pennants, including 11 women's pennants. In Division 1 or A grade, the club has claimed the title on 7 occasions, winning the A grade two rink championships in 1923 and 1927, Division 1 Wednesdays in 1946 and 1965, Division 1 Green Saturday pennant in 1968, and Division 1 Gold Saturday pennant and Division 1 Green Wednesday pennant in 1979.
One of the club's most noteworthy achievements is being home to the 1947 Australian Open champion, Dr. Jack Petchell, after whom the clubhouse is named. Dr. Petchell, who won various state titles and was Sturt Bowling Club champion 9 times, is a true legend in the bowling world.
