Stratford Phoenix Aikido, led by the dedicated Ric Costigan Sensei, is a leading Aikido club based in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. Aikido, a modern martial art rooted in the skills of the Japanese Samurai, is about non-aggression and mastering the redirection of an opponent's energy. It's an art that builds self-confidence, physical fitness, and strong bonds among practitioners.
Founded by Morihei Ueshiba, or “O-sensei,” in the 1920s, Aikido blends classical Japanese martial arts with a philosophy of peace and harmony. This art equips you with effective self-defence techniques while ensuring the wellbeing of your attackers. Various styles of Aikido have flourished across the globe, passed down from master to student.
Affiliated with Yama Arashi UK, Stratford Phoenix Aikido offers a flowing Aikido style balancing martial arts tradition with care and respect. Ric Costigan Sensei, with decades of experience since his start in 1977, founded the club in 2002, bringing his 5th Dan expertise and his status as a British Aikido Board (BAB) National Coach. Assisting him are seasoned 3rd Dan instructors, Russell Coleridge and Paul Totterdell.
Welcoming those aged 18 and above, the club hosts classes every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at the Stratford Leisure Centre's Main Sports Hall. Beginners can attend their first class for free. The club offers a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, encouraging newcomers to either participate or observe at their own pace.
