Strand on the Green Sailing Club is a thriving sailing community located in London, specifically under the Kew Railway Bridge in Chiswick (W4 3PH). With a beautiful riverside setting, the club offers an ideal location for sailing enthusiasts to enjoy their favourite water sport.
The club prides itself on its active racing calendar, with the 2023 season being particularly successful. With 27 races held, the attendance reached up to nine boats, ensuring an exciting and competitive environment. New sailors joining the club offset the departure of others, contributing to a vibrant and diverse community.
Throughout the season, the sailing performances were outstanding, with James consistently dominating the races. However, other skilled sailors such as Lev, Chris, and Rob challenged his supremacy, ensuring that every race was a nail-biting competition. Olly and Billy, sailing in their Mirror, proved to be close contenders after the handicap sums were calculated.
The last race of the 2023 season was a memorable event. Despite the drizzle and overcast conditions, nine dinghies participated in the race. The wind direction was a light SE, which provided a thrilling challenge for the sailors. With the weakened flood tide pushing against the river's flow, all boats successfully sailed to the Bell and Crown on time.
James Armitage, accompanied by Kiren Biekark in Zephyr (Enterprise), made remarkable progress in the downstream beat, finishing the first lap in less than 10 minutes. Lev, sailing solo in Porpoise (Enterprise), followed closely behind, while Dave and Sheila Berger, along with other skilled sailors, battled for optimal positions. Olly and Billy, in their Spinosaurus (Mirror), overcame various challenges, showcasing their sailing prowess.
After the race, participants eagerly anticipated the main event of the day: Beer and Bangers. The club's reputation for hosting exceptional social gatherings lived up to expectations. Delectable sausages, perfectly barbecued by Mary Short, complemented Steve Newell's exceptional beer. The camaraderie and sense of community were palpable as members enjoyed the feast contributed by numerous individuals.
Looking ahead, the club is already planning the next major event: the Dinner and Dance scheduled for 23rd March 2024. Members are encouraged to mark this date in their diaries and contact Marian for tickets, ensuring that they don't miss out on another memorable gathering.
