About

Found a sense of belonging and camaraderie within the boxing community, and the Star Boxing Club in Halifax aims to provide just that.

Catering to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, the club focuses on teaching self-discipline, self-defence, tolerance, teamwork, fitness, and self-control in a safe and controlled environment. Whether someone is looking to simply keep fit or wants to pursue boxing at a more serious level, Star Boxing Club is dedicated to promoting health and fitness in a fun and engaging way.

Boxing training at the club offers an awesome form of self-defence that is easy to learn and highly practical. Alongside improving self-defence skills, participants can expect to see improvements in their overall fitness levels. Star Boxing Club can assist individuals in various fitness goals, be it getting into shape, losing weight, or boosting confidence.

The club's spacious facility is not only utilised for boxing training but also offers its space to rugby teams, football teams, and personal trainers/instructors. This versatility allows for a wide range of activities and collaborations within the local community.

For those seeking a more personalised approach, one-on-one coaching is available with experienced and qualified boxing coaches. This individualised attention ensures that each person receives tailored instruction and guidance to maximise their potential.

In addition to its regular programmes, Star Boxing Club provides a ladies-only fitness session that incorporates various boxing techniques. This 60-minute session is not only a great way to improve fitness but also serves as an effective stress relief.

Recognising the importance of boxing as a sport, the club also offers boxing lessons in schools. These non-contact lessons are conducted in collaboration with the Amateur Boxing Association, encouraging young individuals to develop discipline and physical skills through the sport.

Star Boxing Club takes pride in its tradition and heritage. Established in the 1940s by Bob Ennis, the club initially occupied the top floor of the Star Hotel. Over the years, it faced various challenges and closures but has now been successfully revived by qualified ABA coaches, James Cahill and John Cassidy. Notably, the club produced renowned boxer Richard Dunn, who fought Mohammed Ali for the world heavyweight championship in 1976.

The club's current incarnation was brought to life in November 2021 by professional heavyweight boxer Josh Sandland and former boxer Andy Lowrie. The gym, located at Calder Workshops on Gibbet St HX1 4JQ, is fully approved by the British Boxing Board of Control for professional boxing and is also an England Boxing-approved Amateur Boxing Gym. All trainers and coaches at the club are fully qualified to teach boxing and have received first aid training, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants.

Since its re-opening, Halifax Star Boxing Club operates as a non-profit Community Interest Company (CIC). The club actively collaborates with local community outlets and charities within Halifax, contributing to the betterment of the community.

With a thriving community of members, the club aims to expand its offerings and continue providing a welcoming and inclusive space for individuals to get fit, have fun, and make friends. Those interested can view the club's timetable for class schedules and contact the club via email, phone, or through their social media platforms.
