Stafford Sub Aqua Club | Scuba Diving

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to give you an update from Seb, the organiser of the Stafford Sub Aqua Club. Seb and the rest of the committee have been working hard to keep things ticking over, and there’s loads going on.

Based in Stafford and affiliated with BSAC, the club's got about 50 members, and they offer training for all levels, whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been diving for years. With access to a 2-metre pool, inland dive sites, and the sea, there's plenty of variety for everyone.

One of the best parts of being in the club is the dive trips. Members organise loads of trips around the UK and sometimes abroad. With over 600 dives a year, there's always a chance to explore new underwater spots.

But it's not just about diving. The club holds various social events throughout the year, from BBQs and brewery tours to curry nights and a big Christmas get-together. It's a great way to meet people and have a laugh.

The club's got a history too. Started in 1967 at RAF Stafford, they joined BSAC in 1976. Training used to be at the old brine baths and then at Riverside Sports Centre. Now, they use Stafford Leisure Centre.

Seb, who’s the Chairman and Welfare Officer, has been diving since the early '90s. He started in France, joined BSAC in the late '90s, and has qualifications up to Advanced Diver and Open Water Instructor. He loves spots like James Eagan Layne in Plymouth, Kyarra in Swanage, and even destinations in French Polynesia and the Red Sea. Plus, he’s into underwater photography and coxswaining.

The club’s Diving Officer, Steve Behan, brings loads of experience. He began diving in the '80s in Germany and became an Open Water Instructor in 2019. He’s dived in places like the Similan Islands, Malta, and the Zenobia wreck in Cyprus. Steve loves teaching nearly as much as diving and is always working on his skills.

Richard Haughton, the Training Officer, joined the club in 2014. He quickly went through the ranks to become an Open Water Instructor in 2020. He’s passionate about diving and teaching, always ready to help new divers.

So, if you’re in Stafford or nearby, the Stafford Sub Aqua Club is a friendly spot to learn, dive, and make new mates. Seb and the rest of the team are dedicated to making sure everyone has a great time both in and out of the water.
