Established in 1980 as a humble yoga camp in Tumkur, Karnataka, Shri Pathanjali Yoga Shikshana Samiti (SPYSS) has blossomed into a vast organization that spans over 700 branches worldwide. With more than 40,000 voluntary teachers and millions of devoted practitioners, SPYSS remains committed to fostering the values of Right Attitude, Team Spirit, and Selfless Service. Guided by the wisdom of Shri A R Ramaswamyanna and inspired by the teachings of great yogis like late Shri RaghavendraSwamiji of Malladihalli and late Padmavibhushan Dr. B. K. S. Iyengar, this organization is a beacon of transformation and well-being.
SPYSS stands firm on its foundational mottos: Sanskara (value-based behavior and activities), Sanghatane (identifying ourselves with a greater cause), and Seve (service to humanity). Through its daily yoga classes, SPYSS instills these values, bringing silent yet profound transformation in the lives of millions. These classes promote a healthier lifestyle, dynamic personality development, harmonious family life, and a positive approach to life's challenges, collectively nurturing a better society.
One of the distinctive features of SPYSS is its entirely volunteer-driven model. Teachers dedicate their time and efforts selflessly, making SPYSS the largest voluntary service organization globally in the realm of yoga. The commitment to free, accessible yoga classes underscores the organization's aim to address and improve societal health, moral education for children, youth mentoring, family counseling, stress-free living, and spiritual growth.
There is a deep sense of community and belonging within SPYSS, exemplified by its collective spirit of "One for All and All for One." This philosophy is the cornerstone of all activities, creating an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome and supported in their journey towards holistic well-being. Whether through large-scale events like International Yoga Day celebrations or local group sessions, SPYSS continues to inspire and lead a movement for social enrichment through Yoga Sadhana.
