Mrs Kerry Allerston-Knight has a Level 4 Teaching Diploma in Classical Ballet and Tap and has been teaching at Springhead Dancing Academy since 2006. She started as a pupil at the school in 1982 and progressed through the bbodance syllabus in Ballet and Tap to Intermediate level and Modern to Advanced level. She became a student teacher at the school in 1989 and gained her Teaching Diploma in Classical Ballet in 2006 and Tap Diploma in Character Dance and Musical Theatre.
The Springhead Dancing Academy has been providing fun-filled dance lessons to pupils in Hull for over 40 years. They offer classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Musical Theatre, National, and Character Dance. The school follows the bbodance syllabus, and all teachers are registered members of the organisation. They are also proud members of Dance UK and the Foundation for Community Dance.
The students at the academy have the opportunity to perform in a show held annually during the school Easter holidays. The show is a charity event, and all pupils take part, showcasing their skills in dancing, drama, and acting. Throughout the year, the school also provides demonstrations at charity events in the local community.
Pupils at Springhead Dancing Academy have the option to take examinations in Ballet, Tap, and Modern once they have reached the appropriate level. The school encourages participation in various dance festivals and competitions in the area for students who show an interest.
To ensure a professional appearance, students are required to dress correctly for lessons. Female pupils should wear a black lycra sleeveless round scooped neck leotard, black lycra leggings, and a crossover, along with black leather ballet shoes. Younger pupils start with black tap shoes and progress to white tap shoes as they advance through the syllabus. Hair should ideally be worn in a bun, or well tied back off the face, and no jewellery, except stud earrings, should be worn.
Male pupils should wear a white t-shirt, black lycra leggings or cycling shorts, black ballet shoes, and black tap shoes.
At Springhead Dancing Academy, they believe that dance has many benefits. Besides learning the discipline of different dance genres, students feel part of a dance family and are part of a caring and healthy environment.
The school, located at St Thomas' Church on Hotham Road South in Hull, has two studios, allowing for two sets of lessons to run simultaneously. The bbodance exams offered by the school are validated by Ofqual, and the grades achieved can be used as credit points when applying for college or university.
The Principal of Springhead Dancing Academy is Mrs Patricia Hussey, who has been teaching for 40 years. She trained at the Derry School of Dancing in the bbodance syllabus and founded the academy in 1981. Mrs Patricia Hussey is a fully registered teacher with bbodance in Ballet, Tap, and Modern. She has performed with various theatre companies and has choreographed for local theatre groups for many years.
