Alex, the organiser of Spiral Taiji, wants everyone in the sports community to know about the great opportunities available at their Chen style taijiquan school in Cambridge. They have created a welcoming space for those curious about this ancient Chinese martial art and are excited to offer classes aimed at boosting relaxation, coordination, and both physical and mental strength.
The school has put together a solid curriculum covering various facets of Chen style taijiquan, such as standing post, silk reeling, and forms. Standing post doubles as meditation and posture improvement, helping students to balance and align their bodies. Silk reeling drills down into the core movements of taijiquan, helping students build strength, flexibility, and fluidity. The forms practice, important at Spiral Taiji, guides the flow of yin and yang energies, ensuring a harmonious energy flow.
Spiral Taiji puts the Chen family system at the heart of its lessons, packed with techniques from standing post and silk reeling to hand forms, weapons forms, push hands, and even sparring. Right now, the focus is on the basics and hand forms, but students can dig deeper into this traditional martial art.
Classes are held at Trumpington Pavilion in Cambridge. Alex has made it easy for beginners to join anytime, even offering free 'taster' classes on Wednesdays. Thursday classes are split: the first hour is all about standing post and silk reeling, while the second hour focuses on the Lao Jia Yi Lu form, a key practice in taijiquan known for its softness and large spiralling movements.
For those attending regularly, there's a fee structure that Alex has kept straightforward: pay £25 per month for one class a week or £40 per month for two classes a week, both bills settled at the start of each month. If you prefer to drop in, it's just £10 per one-hour class.
In short, Spiral Taiji in Cambridge, run by Alex, is a go-to spot for anyone, no matter their experience level, to dive into Chen style taijiquan. With a solid curriculum, experienced instructors, and a focus on both relaxation and strength, it’s a great place for improving both physical and mental health through consistent practice.
