About

Celebrate 40 years of Special Olympics Australia! Join Sydney Inner West Basketball Club in a year-long celebration to commemorate the dedication of volunteers and the achievements of thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through sports.

Take a look at the rich history of Special Olympics Australia and contribute to bringing the joy of Special Olympics to even more athletes. Every month on the 29th, we'll open the treasure box and share special moments from the past as we prepare for the future. Be a part of this milestone event and make a difference!

Back in 1976, Special Olympics activities started in Melbourne Inner East (VIC), Kempsey (NSW), Gold Coast (QLD), and Launceston (TAS). Witness the global Special Olympics movement's campaign to end the R-word and discover the beginnings of Special Olympics Australia.

On 29 February 1976, Dr. John Day received a medal in honour of the Gold Coast community's initiation of Special Olympics in Australia. Be a part of history and share your stories.

On 1 April 1977, the first Fun and Fitness Day took place at Kew Cottages, organised by Special Olympics Inner East. 900 people with intellectual disabilities participated in aquatics, athletics, gymnastics, and ball games, marking the beginning of an annual competition in the region.

Join us in celebrating Robyn Cook OAM's dedication to Special Olympics Australia. When Terese joined Special Olympics Australia at the age of 15, she found acceptance and comfort. Witness her journey, winning four gold medals in personal best times at the National Games in 2002 and competing in five National Games overall.

In 1979, the first Mini Olympics was held in Launceston (TAS). Supported by Special Olympics Victoria and the Kennedy Foundation, athletes competed in various sports and enjoyed an Opening and Closing Ceremony, as well as a Civic Reception.

Take a trip down memory lane and watch a video featuring Special Olympics athletes and the music of Kenny Rogers. Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver congratulates Special Olympics Australia on their 40-year anniversary and expresses gratitude to all athletes, volunteers, coaches, and supporters who have been part of this incredible journey.

Come and be a part of this special event! Join the Sydney Inner West Basketball Club in celebrating 40 years of Special Olympics Australia. Let's honour the dedication of volunteers and the achievements of athletes with intellectual disabilities through sports. See you there!
