Judo, which translates to “gentle way” in Japanese, is a martial art that was created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It was conceived as a physical, mental, and moral pedagogy, offering students a comprehensive training experience. Derived from ancient jujutsu techniques, Judo has evolved into the most widely-practised martial art in the world and the second-most practised sport after soccer. Since 1964, Judo has been recognised as an Olympic sport.
The Kodokan, the original school of Judo established by Kano, is still active in Tokyo today.
At South Yarra Judo Academy, students are not only taught Judo techniques such as throws, immobilizations, chokes, and joint locks but also imbued with the values that lie at the core of Judo. These values include courage, respect, modesty, friendship, self-control, honour, honesty, and courtesy. Through the practise of Judo, students develop physical strength, mental focus, and personal growth.
