Join the Southwold Model Yacht Regattas (SMYR) for an exciting season of competitive sailing! The 2024 regatta dates have been confirmed, and the events will take place between Monday 27th May and Wednesday 21st August 2024. Last year's season saw fantastic sailing conditions and a great turnout of sailors, making it a memorable season for all. The regattas feature thrilling races that showcase the skill and talent of the participants. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or new to the sport, SMYR welcomes you with open arms!
The Southwold Model Yacht Regattas offer various exciting races and competitions, including the May Cup, Pout Cup, Family Relay Race, Quincentenary Salver, De Lacroix Rose Bowl, Sole Bay Bell, Golden Jubilee Cup, Cripps Cup, Tracy Collett Cup, St. Edmund's Challenge Cup, Nigel Boat Trophy, Class A Championship, Class B Championship, Class C Championship, Daphnia Cup, Walter Grint Trophy, and Bubble Burgee Winners.
Mark your calendars for the 2024 season dates:
- Spring Regatta on Monday 27th May, featuring the May Cup and Norwich and Peterborough trophies for B and C Class sailors aged 16 and under. Entries will be taken at the pond on the day.
- Pick-Up Regatta on Wednesday 24th July, with entries taken at the pond on the day.
- First Regatta on Saturday 27th July, which includes the Pout Cup for classes B and C.
- Second Regatta on Tuesday 30th July, featuring the thrilling Family Relay Race and the Quincentenary Salver for Beach Yawls.
- 2pm Cups Regatta on Saturday 3rd August, where sailors will compete for the Golden Jubilee Cup, De Lacroix Rosebowl, Sole Bay Bell, and Cripps Cup. The day will also include the Annual General Meeting.
- Third Regatta on Wednesday 7th August, with the Collett Cup for Veteran Yachts and the St Edmund's Cup for Burgee winners of the previous season.
- Fourth Regatta on Tuesday 13th August, which includes the Annual Nigel Boult trophy for new boats, Class A, B, and C Championships, Waveney Shield, and the Commodore's Invitation Race.
- Final Regatta on Wednesday 21st August, a casual event to close the season. Entries will be taken at the pond on the day.
Model yachts have been sailed competitively in Southwold for over 100 years, providing tremendous fun for all. The sport is easy to learn, and sailors of all ages and abilities can participate. Hand-adjusted sailing boats of hull length 15 to 36 inches are allowed, with no radio controls or motors. The regattas take place at the boating lake north of the pier, conveniently located next to the tea room.
