Southside Amateur Boxing Club is a welcoming community located in Edmonton, AB. The club prides itself on being a family-like environment where all athletes are treated equally and with respect. At Southside Amateur Boxing Club, the philosophy is simple – show up, listen, and work hard.
The club offers training sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6-8 pm at their location on 6005 Gateway Blvd NW. Those interested in joining can simply come to the gym when it's open and participate in a class for a $10 fee. All that's needed is running shoes, shorts, and a t-shirt. Membership options are available at monthly and yearly rates.
Southside Amateur Boxing Club defines boxing as the art of hitting your opponent at the furthest distance away while exposing the least part of your body, all while setting up the next punch with speed and velocity. The club's mission is to provide opportunities for youth in Edmonton to safely participate in the sport of Amateur Boxing.
New athletes at the club undergo a basic introduction to the workout before following the same training regime as everyone else. Beginners will not spar until they have learned how to box effectively. Progression in boxing is individual, with athletes allowed to spar after 3 months of dedicated training. The coaches at Southside Amateur Boxing Club focus on technical sparring, with speed, endurance, and accuracy being paramount.
For those interested in competition, athletes must train rigorously for up to 6 months before being matched with an opponent of similar experience. Parental permission is required for athletes under 18 to compete. The club covers expenses for athletes travelling to competitions, with parents and athletes over 18 being asked to do a shift at the club's allocated casino every 2 years to help cover operating costs.
