Southport Amateur Fishing Club

Southport Amateur Fishing Club Inc, established in 1931, is one of the largest fishing clubs on the Gold Coast in Southport, Australia. The club's mission is to promote good fellowship among amateur anglers, advance the sport of fishing through contests, training, and education, and provide subsidies for the promotion of fishing. The club's clubhouse is situated at Marine Parade Southport on the Broadwater, providing a convenient location for members to gather and engage in fishing activities.

Southport Amateur Fishing Club Inc hosts a variety of events and competitions throughout the year. Competitions are primarily held in the nearby Broadwater, but members can also participate in competitions in freshwater, beach, and estuary areas. Some competitions are limited to specific areas and may incorporate events that require offshore fishing. Members are welcome to participate in as many or as few competitions as they desire.

The fishing season runs from January to November, with competitions typically scheduled every two or three weeks apart. Additionally, members have the opportunity to participate in state titles and interclub competitions.

In addition to fishing competitions, the club holds various social events, seminars, workshops, and meetings throughout the year. These events provide members with opportunities for learning and socialising. A notable event is the end-of-year dinner, which includes a trophy presentation. The club encourages everyone, including non-members, to join these events and experience the camaraderie.

Southport Amateur Fishing Club Inc prides itself on being inclusive and does not require members to own or have access to a boat. Members can fish in a variety of locations such as the surf, off a bank, or in a freshwater dam. Club meetings take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 7. 30pm at the club premises.

These meetings serve as a platform to discuss club business, share competition results, and announce upcoming events. Guest speakers are often invited to educate members on the latest fishing equipment, techniques, and general fishing knowledge.

Membership to Southport Amateur Fishing Club Inc costs $50 per person per year, starting in January. The membership fee reduces each month as the year progresses, with fees of $38, $30, and $20 beginning in April, July, and October, respectively. Junior members, aged under 17, have a reduced fee of $10 per child. The club also offers free BBQs and drinks on certain occasions during the year, making membership even more affordable.

The club places special emphasis on the development of younger members, recognising them as the future of the club.
