Dave, the organiser at South Oxford Bowls Club, brings a story that blends tradition with a touch of modern flair. Nestled in Oxford, the club’s journey began in 1906 and hasn't slowed down since. Originally a section of the South Oxford Cricket, Tennis, and Bowls Club, members first rolled their bowls on the Brasenose College grounds.
1911 marked a milestone as the club dedicated a proper green near the river, thanks largely to Edmund Green, a founding member who kept the turf pristine. Fast forward to 1932, a short-lived move to Queens College set the club back, but quick thinking led to a new home on Sunningwell Road by 1933—complete with a green and a pavilion that welcomed all by 1934.
Growth spurred the need for more space, and by 1947, the Lakeside Green became reality, crafted with help from the members themselves. Despite the challenges of the harsh winter of '47, the green stood firm, hosting high-stakes matches ever since.
The 1960s brought new hurdles with plans for nearby housing. Dave led efforts to safeguard the club by negotiating the purchase of adjacent gardens, erecting a boundary fence, and some members even turned parts into allotments.
Affiliations with Bowls England, Bowls Oxfordshire, and the Oxfordshire Bowling Association underscore the club’s standing. With around 85 members, one-third of whom are women, players participate in county and club competitions, as well as local leagues and friendly matches. The club also hosts tourist matches and runs triples leagues on weekdays, drawing teams from the area.
Dave champions a commitment to youth development, offering coaching and encouraging young talent to aim for the County Under-25 team.
When winter rolls in, members switch to short-mat bowls on Thursday evenings, complimented by a full range of social events at the clubhouse.
For those eager to join, more details can be found on the club's website and social media pages. South Oxford Bowls Club celebrates its rich history and looks forward to welcoming new enthusiasts to their vibrant community.
