Chris believes anyone can train at the South Gloucestershire Karate Academy. The club is family-friendly, welcoming all ages, genders, abilities, and fitness levels. Kids as young as five can join in. Chris’s mission is to create a welcoming space for everyone to learn and practise karate.
At the academy, they emphasise the Wado-Ryu style but also invite those studying other styles to join. With experienced, fully insured instructors, Chris ensures everyone's safety and well-being.
The academy offers a robust training programme covering all aspects of karate, including self-defence. Throughout the year, they host courses and competitions—though participants can choose their level of involvement.
Their grading system features nine belt colours below black belt, known as Kyu grades. Gradings occur every 3–4 months, allowing students to showcase their progress and move up. Chris provides a grading syllabus for all levels, so everyone can advance at their own pace.

Another option in the Clevedon/Yatton area is North Somerset Wado Kai (NSWK). It’s a family-friendly, volunteer-run, not-for-profit club teaching Wado-Ryu karate for grading, self-defence, and competition. They follow a ten-grade system below black belt, known as Kyu grades.
