At South Devon Aikikai, Steve runs a welcoming martial arts club in Newton Abbot, perfect for anyone keen on learning the Japanese art of Aikido. Sessions take place every Thursday from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm, and Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at Ashmoor Leisure Centre, South Devon Community College, Balland Lane, Ashburton, TQ13 7EW.
New to Aikido? Steve's got you covered with a 6-week beginners course starting on 4th January for just £40. This introductory course is ideal for getting to grips with the basics—think safe falling, proper movement, and effective coordination. It’s a solid step into Aikido principles and techniques.
Throughout the year, the club offers advanced courses with top Aikido masters. In February, Pascal Durchon (6th Dan Aikikai) will be leading a session, followed by Dimitri Crenier (6th Dan Aikikai) in April. There's even talk of a week-long course with Pascal in August 2024. And don't miss the major event hosted by their sister club, Yokohama International Aikido Devon.
Curious? Why not drop by for a free trial session? Just contact Steve and come in comfy gear, like a tracksuit. The club provides a safe and supportive space for everyone.
Aikido stands out as a modern martial art rooted in ancient traditions, emphasising instinctive responses and coordination over brute strength. This makes it perfect for real-world self-defence and lifelong practice.
Training at South Devon Aikikai is all about cooperative development, with no strict age or gender divisions. Sessions focus on personal growth, mastering techniques, and understanding human interaction without much speaking, though beginners are encouraged to ask questions.
Aikido here isn't just physical—regular practice can lead to significant changes in how you react to life’s challenges. Steve also acknowledges the diverse styles within Aikido, ensuring the club respects various branches and experiences.
