System to determine the difficulty level of our walks. This helps members choose walks that are suitable for their fitness and experience levels. Our grading system ranges from Grade 1 to Grade 6. Grade 1 walks are the easiest, suitable for beginners and families.
Grade 6 walks are the most challenging, involving steep climbs, off-track sections, and significant endurance requirements.
Our preference as a club is to undertake walks in the Grade 4-6 range, which are more challenging and remote. These walks can involve steep and difficult terrain, river crossings, and longer distances. However, we also offer walks in the lower grade range for those who are new to bushwalking and want to build their fitness and experience.
The South Coast Bushwalking Club is based in Wollongong, with most members residing in the Wollongong, Southern Sydney, Kiama, and Southern Highlands areas. We are a member club of Bushwalking NSW and adhere to their guidelines. Our walks cover various regions, both locally in the Illawarra area and in southern, southeast, and southwest NSW. The starting point for our walks is usually within a 30-minute to 3-hour drive, depending on the duration of the walk.
To join our club, you don't need prior experience, but a moderate level of fitness is required. As a minimum guide, you should be able to walk 8 to 10 km on undulating terrain. Our walks are suitable for anyone from moderately fit to very fit individuals. All walks are graded, and our knowledgeable leaders can assist you in choosing the appropriate level of walk for your capabilities.
We offer single-day bushwalks, which can vary in distance depending on the terrain. On average, you can expect to walk for 5 to 6 hours on a day walk. We also provide overnight walks, ranging from 2 days and 1 night to longer trips of 7 to 8 nights in the bush. These multi-day adventures can take place on and off track, and may involve camping in established campgrounds or unexplored wilderness sites.
The difficulty level of these walks is graded, and for some walks, there may be limitations on the number of participants.
In addition to local walks, our club regularly offers members the opportunity to join groups for walking trips interstate and overseas. This allows members to explore new and exciting destinations while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow bushwalkers.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced bushwalker, the South Coast Bushwalking Club welcomes individuals who have a passion for challenging and remote walks.
