Chris, the organiser of the Southampton University Archery Club, invites all members of the University of Southampton community to join this inclusive club. Open to undergraduates, postgraduates, and staff alike, the club caters to everyone, whether you're shooting for fun or aiming for a more competitive edge.
For those new to archery, Chris has arranged a taster session to kick off the academic year. Completely free and requiring no prior experience, the taster session is a great chance to try out the sport. This year's session is scheduled for 30th September 2023, from 17:00 to 21:30, at the Team Southampton Sports Hall.
Chris encourages beginners to attend, assuring all that the necessary equipment and instruction will be provided. To become a full member, newcomers will need to complete a beginners' course, consisting of three 2.5-hour sessions held weekly starting in October. This course covers essential skills and safe shooting practices.
Upon completing the beginners' course, individuals gain full membership, allowing them to shoot at the club's range during regular hours. Experienced archers who've completed a beginners' course elsewhere can easily join by contacting the club via email; Chris will provide further details to get them started.
Membership offers numerous perks, including range time, weekly coaching, access to equipment, and membership to the UoS Athletics Union and ArcheryGB. There's also subsidised travel and accommodation for competitions and social events. Current ArcheryGB members can join as associate members, but all members will need a Sport and Wellbeing membership to use university facilities.
The club's website, managed by the Southampton University Students' Union, provides quick links to essential pages and keeps everyone updated with the latest news and events.
In a nutshell, Chris's aim with the Southampton University Archery Club is to create an inclusive space for archers of all levels. With taster sessions, beginners' courses, and a welcoming environment, the club seeks to introduce newcomers to the sport while supporting experienced archers. Membership comes with a host of benefits to enjoy throughout the year.
