Sonkei Shotokan Karate Club is located in Chester-le-Street, a town in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. Established in 2014, the club is led by Chief Instructor Sensei Noreen Small who holds an impressive 6th Dan black belt. Sensei Noreen has a wealth of experience in karate, spanning over 30 years, and is highly respected in the martial arts community.

At Sonkei Shotokan Karate Club, they believe in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. They warmly invite students of all genders, abilities, and ages from 6 years old and above to join their club. Whether you are a seasoned karate practitioner or a complete beginner, Sonkei provides a supportive space for everyone to learn and grow.

Training sessions are held at two convenient locations. The Birtley Dojo hosts training sessions on Tuesdays, starting at 5:30pm, and Thursdays, starting at 6pm. The Newcastle Dojo holds training sessions on Wednesdays, starting at 5:45pm. Prospective students can join the club at any time, and new starters are always welcome.

Sonkei Shotokan Karate Club is proud to be a member of the Takushoku Karate Association (TKA). TKA England is affiliated with the Amateur Martial Association (AMA). These associations provide a network of support and resources, enabling the club to offer high-quality training and opportunities to its members.

Transportation to both Dojos is made easy with regular bus services. The Birtley Dojo is conveniently located near free car parks for those who prefer to drive. The Newcastle Dojo has limited on-street parking, but there are public parking options available nearby. It's important to note that the club cannot be held responsible for any fines incurred from student or parent parking.

Karate is a martial art that originated in Japan, and Shotokan is one of the most widely practised styles around the world. Sonkei Shotokan Karate Club follows the traditional teachings of Shotokan, emphasising punching, kicking, and blocking techniques. However, karate goes beyond physical training and also instils confidence, respect, and discipline in its practitioners.

The TKA was founded in 2015 by Sensei Gordon Mathie, who has an extensive background in karate and achieved the rank of 6th Dan. Sensei Mathie was a member of the KUGB for 30 years and served in various roles within the organisation. Sonkei Shotokan Karate Club is proud to be part of the TKA family and offers students the opportunity to be part of a respected martial arts association.
