Ski The Tasman is a ski resort located in Aoraki / Mount Cook, New Zealand. Known for its breathtaking scenery and thrilling ski runs, it offers a unique opportunity to explore New Zealand's largest glacier, the Tasman Glacier, and its magnificent ice formations.
As Mount Cook's original and most experienced mountain and ski guiding company, Ski The Tasman is dedicated to providing an unforgettable snow adventure. Using aircraft to access NZ's two longest ski runs, each with over a thousand metres of vertical descent, skiers can enjoy an exhilarating experience skiing down the glacier.
The ski runs at Ski The Tasman are easy to moderate, ranging from green to blue grade, making it perfect for intermediate skiers. The pace of the runs is relaxed, allowing skiers to soak up the incredible grandeur of New Zealand's highest mountains. However, please note that Ski The Tasman is not suitable for snowboarders.
Ski The Tasman operates during winter, from 28th June to the 30th September 2024. Its prime location and access to the Tasman Glacier provide a unique skiing experience that cannot be found anywhere else in New Zealand.
Every fine day, Ski The Tasman offers two runs on the Tasman Glacier, each starting from a different landing spot and taking a different line. The average run length is about 8 km, with some seasons reaching up to 10 km. The highest landing spot is at Tasman Saddle, at an elevation of 2,400 metres, while the lowest aircraft pick up is at Malte Brun strip, at 1,500 metres.
Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is home to approximately 178 separate glaciers, with the Tasman and Godley being the two main systems. The Tasman Glacier's history dates back 2 million years, to the Pleistocene ice ages. Over time, the glacier has advanced and retreated, leaving behind moraine deposits and carving out Lake Pukaki.
At Ski The Tasman, safety is of utmost importance. All guides are qualified professionals and have extensive knowledge of the Tasman Glacier. Our guides have been ski guiding the glacier since the early 1970s, making them the most experienced in the area. They hold either full IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guides Association) or full NZMGA (New Zealand Mountain Guide Association) ski guide qualifications, ensuring a safe and unforgettable skiing experience.
Among the experienced guides at Ski The Tasman is Tai Naka, the Lead Guide and Winter Ops Manager. Tai is a full IFMGA Guide and spends his professional life scaling peaks in summer and shredding it in winter. Another notable guide is Dave McKinley, a full IFMGA guide with extensive experience in mountains both in New Zealand and overseas.
Ski The Tasman also offers various packages, including airport transfers, scenic flights, and return air transfer packages from Queenstown and Wnaka to Mount Cook. Gift vouchers are also available for purchase, allowing recipients to enjoy Ski The Tasman or other Alpine Guides activities.
