The Mount Mawson Skifield is managed and operated by devoted volunteers from various ski clubs, including the Ski Club of Tasmania, Oldina Ski Club, Wellington Ski Club, Hobart Walking Club, Mount Mawson Ski Club, Alpine Club of Southern Tasmania, and the University Ski Club. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to maintain and enhance the ski area, ensuring that you have the best possible experience on the slopes.
When you visit, you'll find three rope tows available: Mawson, University, and Rodway. These tows cater to skiers of all levels, so whether you're a beginner or an expert, there's something for everyone. To use the tows, you'll need a Tow Belt, which can be hired on the mountain and is conveniently included in the ticket price.
Access to the tows is a scenic adventure in itself. You'll embark on a 30-45 minute uphill walk from the Lake Dobson car park, surrounded by breathtaking views. And don't worry, on your way back, you can even ski down the trail! In addition to downhill skiing, cross-country skiing options are also available in the surrounding areas, such as the Rodway Range, Tarn Shelf, and Mount Field West.
To reach the ski field, you'll need to take a short drive to the Mt Field National Park via New Norfolk. From there, you'll head down the Dobson Highway, which is a dirt road, until you reach Lake Dobson. The journey from Hobart typically takes around 1.5 hours, so be sure to drive safely and responsibly to ensure a pleasant visit.
