Skemers Boxing Club is a community-focused gym located in Bristol, New Zealand. The club is passionate about using boxing as a tool for personal development and social cohesion. With a range of classes and programmes, Skemers aims to provide inclusive access to fitness and boxing for all individuals, regardless of ability or age.
The club is pleased to have recently been awarded new premises under the Bristol City Council Community Asset Transfer scheme. This new location will allow Skemers to further their mission of nurturing physical and emotional health within the community.
The board members of Skemers Boxing Club, Chris Winters, Lee Hooper, Craig Hooper, and Toby Varney, are dedicated individuals who share a deep commitment to the club's values and objectives.
Skemers offers a variety of classes throughout the week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings are dedicated to carded/advanced classes from 6:00PM – 7:30PM. These sessions are priced at 3 per session or 30 monthly. Following the advanced classes, there is an adult session from 8:00PM – 9:15PM, which costs 5 per session or 40 monthly.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the club holds beginners classes for individuals aged 8–17 years from 6:00PM – 7:00PM. The cost for these sessions is 3 per session or 30 monthly.
Skemers Boxing Club has garnered recognition for its efforts in the community. Bristol's Lord Mayor, Marvin Rees, himself a former boxer, recognises the value that community boxing clubs bring to the area. Skemers also recently completed a first aid course provided by the British Board of Boxing Control. The club is actively involved in reducing crime and reoffending in the community, with a particular focus on engaging vulnerable and marginalised groups.
Skemers Boxing Club is proud to have produced champions and to have hosted significant events. The club continues to inspire local youth through the success of professional boxer Duane Winters, also known as “The Gasman. ” Duane's achievements provide young individuals with a role model and aspiration.
