The Shukokai-Ryu Karate-Do Association is a renowned karate school located in Christchurch, New Zealand. With a focus on both traditional and sport karate, the association welcomes students of all levels and abilities.
The chief instructor, Sensei Stewart Tompkins, holds a 6th Dan black belt and has been practising karate since 1985. He has achieved numerous accolades, including winning Gold at both the WUKF European Karate Championships and the UWK World Karate Championships. Sensei Stewart is dedicated to helping students develop their co-ordination, flexibility, balance, and confidence through the practise of karate.
The association firmly believes in the Shukokai philosophy, which translates to “a way for all”. The martial art style taught at the school is a direct descendant of the Shito-Ryu branch of karate. Whether you are looking for fitness, self-defence skills, traditional karate training, or the opportunity to compete at club, national, international, or world levels, the Shukokai-Ryu Karate-Do Association can cater to your needs.
Classes are held on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at various locations in Christchurch, West Parley, and Ringwood. The class timetable allows students to choose from beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Regular gradings are conducted, providing students with the opportunity to progress and achieve recognition for their efforts. Additionally, the association holds yearly awards and social events to foster a strong sense of community among its members.
The highly experienced team of instructors includes Assistant Chief Instructor, Sensei Karen Tompkins, who holds a 1st Dan black belt, Assistant Instructor, Sensei Lee Davies, who also holds a 1st Dan black belt, and Junior Instructor, Sensei Harry Tompkins, who holds a 2nd Dan black belt.
As a member of the All-Styles Karate Alliance (AKA), the Shukokai-Ryu Karate-Do Association is committed to promoting excellence and upholding the highest standards in karate training.
