Shotokan Martial Arts Club in Levis is a proud member of the ISKF Quebec, carrying on the traditional roots of karate that date back to its origins on Okinawa Island and its subsequent spread throughout Japan by Master Gichin Funakoshi. The history of karate dates back to 1395 when Chinese families immigrated to Okinawa and began passing down martial arts techniques in secret, as the possession of weapons was prohibited by King Sho Hashi. Over the years, the techniques evolved to focus on using the body's natural weapons most effectively, leading to the development of karate.

Master Gichin Funakoshi introduced karate to Japan in the early 20th century, ultimately creating the Shotokan style. Combining elements of two distinct styles, shorei-ryu and shorin-ryu, Funakoshi formulated a new approach that emphasized breathing, energy release, and superior mind-body control. The creation of Shotokan marked a new era in the practice of karate, with Funakoshi becoming known as the father of modern karate.

Today, Shotokan Martial Arts Club upholds the teachings and philosophy of Master Funakoshi, offering training and instruction in this iconic style of karate.
