Shirley Gymnastics Club, located in Croydon, is a vibrant and inclusive gymnastics club that caters to approximately 200 aspiring young gymnasts between the ages of 4 and 18. The club prides itself on making gymnastics fun for all its members.
Established 15 years ago under the guidance of Malcolm Campbell, who was formerly the Head Coach for the regional Boys Brigade vaulting team, Shirley Gymnastics Club has since undergone a restructure and is now managed by a dedicated team committed to its successful future.
As a member of the British Gymnastics Organisation and the London Gymnastics Federation, the club actively participates in national festivals and competitions. Shirley Gymnastics Club offers recreational, intermediate, and advanced gymnastic classes and warmly welcomes new members of all abilities. The motto of the club, “making gymnastics fun for all”, is particularly evident in these classes.
The club also has three squads, namely Moonstone, Ruby, and Diamond, which consist of selected gymnasts. Each squad has its own dedicated training slots that must be attended. Exclusive invitations to join the introductory squad, Moonstone, are extended to recreational gymnasts who demonstrate exceptional skills.
Additionally, Shirley Gymnastics Club boasts two display teams that perform intricate routines combining tumbling, choreography, and acro gymnastics. These teams dedicate numerous hours of practise to achieve the high standards required by the UK display team circuit. Performances take place at local summer fetes as well as at annual gymnastic festivals in London, Liverpool, Dublin, and Scotland.
In terms of activities and awards, the club offers a variety of training on the floor, vault, trampette, and sports acrobatics. Members are encouraged to participate in the club's in-house competitions, although it is not mandatory. Furthermore, the club operates its own certificated awards scheme to recognise the achievements and progress of its gymnasts.
At Shirley Gymnastics Club, the coaching team comprises British Gymnastics qualified and DBS checked coaches with safeguarding qualifications. The club's management committee, the coaches education programme team, club captains, and the entire coaching team work together to ensure the smooth operation of the club and the development of its gymnasts.
