And gained experience teaching a range of dance styles to students of all ages. However, she always dreamed of having her own dance school.
In 2001, Sharon Kennard School of Dance was born. The school offers a variety of dance classes for students aged 2 1/2 and up, including Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz, Disco, and Cheerleading. All classes take place at Fant Community Hall, providing a comfortable and spacious environment for students to learn and practise.
One of the highlights of the school is the opportunity for students to take exams through the I. D. T. A (International Dance Teachers Association) in Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz, and Disco.
While taking exams is encouraged, it is not compulsory. However, since 2001, the school has maintained an impressive 100% pass rate in exams, with 97% of exams taken in the last set passing with Honours or Distinction. This is a testament to the high standard of teaching and the dedication of the students.
In addition to exams, the school also holds its own annual show, “It's Show Time”, in which all students participate. This provides a chance for students to showcase their talent and hard work to friends, family, and the local community. Furthermore, students have had the opportunity to perform at various school fetes and extravaganzas in and around Maidstone during the summer months. Some students have even successfully auditioned for Pantomimes at prestigious venues such as Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone and Central Theatre in Chatham, performing alongside well-known stars from the entertainment industry.
The school also gives students the chance to perform at renowned venues in London and even Disneyland Paris. Over the years, students have performed at Her Majesty's Theatre in the West End, home to famous shows like Phantom of the Opera, as well as at the Shaftesbury Theatre, known for hosting acclaimed musicals such as Fame and Hairspray. These opportunities allow students to experience the thrill of performing on big stages and to gain exposure to the wider dance community.
Under the guidance of Sharon Kennard, the school has created a warm and supportive environment for students. Sharon herself has a wealth of experience and passion for dance, having started dancing at a young age and becoming a qualified dance teacher at just 16. Her dedication and love for the art form are evident in the success of her students and the numerous exciting projects the school has been involved in over the years.
The Sharon Kennard School of Dance is a place where students can learn, grow, and showcase their talent. Whether they are beginners or aspiring professionals, all students are welcomed and encouraged to pursue their passion for dance.
