Sea Trout (Sewin) & Brown Trout fishing on the River Teifi is a popular activity in Cardigan. The Teifi River Guides, a fishing club in the area, are excited to announce their upcoming fishing event. The Sewin fishing season kicks off in April and May, with the larger fish typically making their presence known during this time. While the fishing may be a bit slow and the nights cold, it is still a thrilling experience.
However, from June to the first two weeks of August, the Sewin fly-fishing is incredibly prolific. This is the prime time for beginners to try their luck, especially in July when the nights are warmer. Sewin are abundant during this period and are readily taking the fly. Towards the end of August and into September, the Sewin begin to lose their silvery coats and start to resemble the Brown Trout.
As the Sewin season winds down, anglers can shift their attention to Teifi Grilse and Salmon. The Brown Trout population on the Teifi River has declined over the years, but efforts have been made to replenish their numbers. The angling associations on the Teifi strongly encourage catch and release to preserve the fish population. While the numbers may have declined, there are still several spots in the lower reaches and tributaries of the river that offer great fishing opportunities.
A typical Trout Trek day with Teifi River Guides is a true adventure. The day starts with a trip up the river to the source of the Teifi, fishing the picturesque Teifi Pools. After that, the group moves downstream to fish the glides and streams of the upper reaches. The day is punctuated by a delicious late lunch at a trout fishery and concludes on the lower reaches of the river. It's an incredible way to witness wildlife and experience the wild trout fishing in the beautiful Teifi Valley.
For those who prefer still water angling, there are many large and small fisheries in the area. Llys-Y-Fran and Hays Castle fishery are just a couple of examples. Teifi River Guides can assist in pre-booking day tickets and boats for these fisheries, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable fishing experience.
