Save Port Kembla DIY Skatepark is a community-led initiative in Port Kembla, Australia, aimed at preserving and protecting the beloved skatepark from removal by the Wollongong Council. The skatepark has been a significant asset to the community, especially during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has provided a safe and inclusive space for young people and families to enjoy active play and connect with others.
The Port Kembla Community, in collaboration with the Wollongong Council, have worked tirelessly to ensure the skatepark's safety and maintenance. No issues regarding noise or anti-social behaviour have been reported, and the skatepark is rarely used after dark. Additionally, extensive consultation was conducted during the King George V Masterplan, identifying the site as the preferred location for a skatepark.
The establishment of the DIY skatepark was essential in addressing the long-standing neglect of Port Kembla by the State Government and the Wollongong City Council. For over two decades, community members have advocated for a skatepark that caters to the needs of the youth in the area. Unfortunately, previous rounds of the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund, a substantial community fund, were misallocated to projects unrelated to the community's pressing needs.
Save Port Kembla DIY Skatepark calls upon the Wollongong City Council to reconsider its decision to remove the skatepark, recognising the valuable contribution it has made to the community. The residents of Port Kembla refuse to accept mere empty promises of revitalisation and demand a better solution that preserves the hard work and dedication put into creating a vibrant skateboarding community.
To support the cause, individuals can sign the petition and follow @PORT_KEMBLA_SKATEBOARDERS on social media for updates. Additionally, concerned citizens can send personal letters to the Wollongong City Councillors, expressing their love for skateboarding and emphasising the urgent need for a skate facility in Port Kembla.
Save Port Kembla DIY Skatepark recognises and acknowledges the Dharawal people as the traditional owners of the land and respects their past, present, and emerging elders. The campaign is authorised by D. Hayden for the Greens NSW and is committed to building a sustainable and fair society that prioritises environmental sustainability, social and economic justice, peace and non-violence, and grassroots democracy.
Join the movement and be part of building a brighter future for Port Kembla.
