Sandon Royals FC, located in Chelmsford, is a reputable and long-standing football club with a rich history and a strong presence in the local football scene. They entered the Mid-Essex League and received immense support from Harry Smethurst, a parent of one of the players and a member of the Great Baddow Royal British Legion. With the help of Smethurst, the club secured the former Crompton Parkinson sports ground at Princes Road in Chelmsford, which is now the site of a Tesco store.
Under the management of former Chelmsford City goalkeeper Eric Milburn, the club quickly gained success. After a few successful seasons, a reserve team was formed in 1979, and in 1981, both the first team and the reserves joined the Essex Olympian League. In 1986, the club was forced to leave their home ground and relocated to the newly completed Arun Close ground in Springfield. The club, then known as Great Baddow Royal Engineers FC, was based at the Royal Engineers Club on Springfield Road.
However, the club's quest for a permanent home ground led them to merge with Sandon Sports FC in 1993. This merger allowed the club to play at the current ground located in Woodhill Road, Sandon. The club retained its nickname, becoming Sandon Royals, and has been known by this name ever since.
