Sandhurst Karate Club is a reputable and dedicated martial arts club located in Sandhurst, New Zealand. Affiliated with the Southern Shotokan Karate Association, this club is committed to teaching Shotokan Karate, one of the oldest and most effective forms of self-defence. The club meets and trains weekly at the Sandhurst Sports Centre on Owlsmoor Road.
At Sandhurst Karate Club, students are taught the importance of discipline and respect towards the art of Karate and their fellow students. The primary goal is to learn self-defence skills, rather than seeking confrontation or showing off. Each training session is divided into four sections, ensuring a comprehensive and well-rounded learning experience.
The first section involves a thorough warm-up which lasts for about 15 minutes. This warm-up is essential in preparing the body and mind for the techniques that will be practised. It includes stretching and relaxing various muscle groups to minimise the risk of injuries during training. The second section focuses on perfecting the basic techniques of Shotokan Karate, with individual moves performed in sync with the instructor's count.
The third section of the training session is dedicated to sparring. Here, students put their basic techniques into practise with a partner, with controlled and minimal contact between the two individuals. Even at advanced levels, full contact striking is not allowed during training. Finally, the fourth section involves practising kata, a series of techniques assembled in a specific formation.
Kata helps students master their techniques without a partner and is designed to be practised daily to reinforce what was taught in the session.
Sandhurst Karate Club welcomes individuals of all ages and skill levels. Whether you are a novice or an experienced practitioner, this club offers a friendly and supportive environment for learning and growth. The training sessions not only provide a rigorous workout for the entire body but also contribute to overall physical fitness and well-being.
