Are your children interested in sailing? Waldringfield Sailing Club offers an active junior section where they can enjoy sailing and be part of a friendly community. Located on the beautiful River Deben, Waldringfield is home to the Dragonfly Class. Sailing in Squib boats is a popular activity here. Squibs are RYA National Keelboats that provide a unique sailing experience.
With a GRP moulded hull, measuring 5.8m in length, and weighing 680Kg, Squibs are perfect for two people of different weights, sizes, ages, and experience levels. As strict one design boats, Squibs ensure fair and open racing. They are not just for racing, though, as they can be used for casual family day sailing too. These boats are stable and spacious, making them great for families. Towing a Squib is easy with a purpose-built braked road trailer and a medium-sized car.
Even in strong winds, the cockpit and fin keel of Squibs provide extra protection and prevent capsizing. Waldringfield is an ideal location for Squib sailing, offering access to the tidal river and estuary. The Waldringfield Squib fleet is made up of around 15 boats, with a mix of sailing experience and well-maintained vessels. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sailor, you will find a friendly and welcoming atmosphere at Waldringfield Sailing Club.
The cost of acquiring a Squib can vary. There are options available under £1000 for serviceable boats that may need restoration work. Competitive boats can be found within the £3000 budget range, whereas recently produced Squibs are well-made and ready to sail competitively. Waldringfield Sailing Club's Squib fleet has professionally maintained downriver moorings, which cost £240 annually. Access to the moorings requires a tender, which can be kept on the beach, and an outboard motor can be stored at the club. To support the class funding, there is a £10 annual fee per helm and crew.
Owning a Squib at Waldringfield Sailing Club allows you to enjoy local sailing on the River Deben and also provides the opportunity to participate in club regattas in the region and compete against other Squibs. Additionally, there is an annual National Championship that rotates around the UK and Ireland, as well as a National Inland Championship held at Rutland Water every year. For more information or to arrange a sail in a Squib, feel free to contact the Class Captain, Barry Searle.
