Sailability Wellington, founded by the dedicated team led by Jane Smith, serves as the heartland for adaptive sailing in the Wellington region.
Back in 2003, the club secured its first set of Hansa yachts, specially crafted for sailors with disabilities. This pivotal moment opened up the world of sailing to many in Wellington, marking a new era of inclusivity.
A year later, in 2004, Jane and her team extended their reach to Seaview Marina, next to Lowry Bay Yacht Club. This move brought along greater accessibility and more chances for members to get on the water.
By 2006, Sailability Wellington’s volunteer programme took off, inviting community members to step in and support the sailors. These volunteers have grown into a steadfast support network that keeps the club sailing smoothly.
Expansion continued in 2010 with a new base at Titahi Bay Boating Club in Porirua Harbour. This addition meant even more sailors could experience the thrill and joy of sailing.
Fast forward to 2019, Sailability Wellington began crafting the ParAble-Whakatauki class of sailboats, tailored specifically for sailors with disabilities. With two of these boats already in development, the club is gearing up for a 2023 regatta, showcasing inclusive sailing opportunities.
With a robust community of over 200 sailors and 70 seasoned volunteers, Jane Smith’s Sailability Wellington is all about fun, learning, confidence, rehabilitation, challenge, and competition. Operating up to six days a week, they ensure every sailor finds activities that match their interests and skills.
Safety is Jane's top priority. Sailability Wellington strictly adheres to safety protocols, leveraging 27 specialised Hansa yachts and 3 support boats to guarantee a secure and enjoyable experience for all participants.
Jane invites keen sailors and potential volunteers alike to join Sailability Wellington. Whether helping onshore, prepping boats, managing docks, or working behind the scenes, there’s a role for everyone. The club also welcomes support through sponsorships, donations, and legacy gifts from individuals and businesses.
As the largest adaptive sailing programme in New Zealand, Jane Smith’s Sailability Wellington is proud of its legacy and the positive impact on its members’ lives. Join them for lifelong fun, friendship, and adventure on the stunning waters of Wellington.
