Queen Mary Sailing Club, located in Ashford, is excited to promote an upcoming local Sailing event called Sailability. Sailability's main goal is to provide an unforgettable sailing experience for children and adults with any form of physical, sensory, or learning disability. They believe in empowering each sailor to the best of their ability and inspiring a love for sailing.
This fantastic activity is run by a team of qualified and trained volunteers who ensure a safe and caring environment. Sailability takes place every Thursday from April to the end of October. The best part? No previous sailing experience is required to participate!
During the morning, Special Schools are warmly welcomed to join in on the fun. In the afternoon, adults are given the chance to take part. They can choose to sail socially in keel boats or engage in Hansa racing, catering to different preferences. Additionally, there's a Saturday Morning Club that brings together both able-bodied sailors and those with disabilities for race training and racing on equal terms.
Sailability is equipped with a great selection of specially adapted boats. They have 2 Drascombe Longboats, 2 Yeoman keel boats, and 6 Hansa dinghies specifically designed for people with limited mobility. Launching these boats is made easy with the assistance of a boat hoist and a ramp leading to a stable pontoon on the sheltered East side of the reservoir. To further accommodate sailors with physical disabilities, a personal hoist is available on the pontoon.
Sailors involved with Sailability also have the chance to participate in various events throughout the year. These include the Queen Mary Bloody Mary in January, Bart's Bash in September, and a delightful Christmas lunch in December. It's worth mentioning some remarkable accomplishments, such as Janet securing First Hansa in the 2015 Bart's Bash and Nev, who, despite a water ski accident three years ago, now trains with Paralympians and travels to international events in a 2.4m.
In order to promote the sport and encourage new sailors and volunteers, there are events where individuals can have a “taster” and experience the freedom of being on the water. Plus, light refreshments are available to keep everyone energised and hydrated.
Last but certainly not least, in June 2017, Sailability celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special guest: HRH The Princess Royal. The event also included the naming ceremony of a new Drascombe Longboat called “Zingaroo,” adding an extra touch of excitement to the occasion.
For those interested in learning more about Sailability's activities or inquiring about volunteering opportunities, they can easily get in touch with the Sailability Support Team via email. The season kicks off on the first Thursday in April for adults and the week after Easter Holidays for schools. Admission fees are £5 for adults and £5 for students, while parents, guardians, teachers, and carers can attend for free.
Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to be a part of Sailability and experience the joy of sailing on the picturesque waters of Queen Mary Sailing Club.
