Located in Ohakune, New Zealand, the RNZN Alpine and Ski Club is a thriving community dedicated to promoting and encouraging recreational and competitive amateur skiing, mountaineering, tramping, and other alpine sports within the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). As a club owned by its members, it offers a sense of camaraderie and adventure for serving RNZN members, with membership open to all.
The club has a rich history, dating back to 1966 when officers and men of HMNZS IRIRANGI first conceived the idea of building a ski hut on Mt Ruapehu. Recognising the importance of having a permanent foothold on the mountain, they submitted an application to the National Parks Board for permission to construct a “House that Jack Built” on the Eastern side of the mountain. A site was allocated at an elevation of approximately 6,500 feet in the Tukino Village, joining the ranks of other established club lodges in the area.
To fulfil the National Parks Board's requirements, the club had to adhere to strict design specifications that would enhance the alpine atmosphere. After plans were drawn up and accepted, construction began with a budget of 3,500 pounds, allowing for a significant amount of self-help labour. In order to partake in activities on the mountain as a club, they also became members of the New Zealand Ski Association, necessitating the formation of an incorporated society.
An inaugural meeting was called, resulting in 88 individuals expressing their support for the formation of the ski club. The first General Meeting was held on October 20, 1967, during which a draught constitution was passed, and the first committee was elected. Led by Lt Cdr G. W.
Glyde as President, CPO P. Allen as Secretary, and Instr. Lt D. A.
Stewart as Treasurer, the committee worked tirelessly to establish a strong foundation for the club. This included registering as an Incorporated Society and developing plans for the provision of a ski lodge and skiing facilities for its members.
Today, the RNZN Alpine and Ski Club continues to thrive, offering its members a wide range of activities and opportunities to explore the beauty of the surrounding alpine landscape. From skiing and snowboarding to mountaineering and tramping, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The club serves as a hub for like-minded individuals who share a passion for adventure and the outdoors.
