Etc). Ian has also trained in Judo and holds a 1st Kyu Brown Belt (awarded by the British Judo Association). Ian is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and love for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with his students.
At Rising Tide Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the focus is on providing high level Jiu Jitsu instruction and training. Whether you are a recreational enthusiast looking to improve your fitness and self-defence skills, or a competitive player aiming to excel in tournaments, our classes are tailored to meet your needs.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, also known as BJJ, is a martial art that has been proven to be one of the most effective combat systems in one-on-one situations. It originated from the ground fighting fundamentals of Kodokan Judo, which were taught to Carlos Gracie by Mitsuyo Maeda in the early 1900s. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu eventually became its own art through the experimentation, practise, and adaptation by Carlos and Hlio Gracie. It promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and joint-locks and chokeholds.
Our training at Rising Tide Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, as well as self-defence. Sparring, or “rolling”, and live drilling play a major role in our training, as it allows practitioners to effectively spar and train at near full capability without causing severe harm to themselves or their training partners.
We are proud to be associated with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and multi-time champion Chico Mendes from the legendary Checkmat team. Our instructor and team members attend weekly classes with Chico to ensure that the best instruction in BJJ is passed on to our students. Additionally, our club members have the opportunity to attend seminars with Chico and other Checkmat professors on a regular basis.
It is important to note that our club is dedicated to providing proper qualifications and passing on knowledge with integrity. Beware of clubs that offer instruction in Jiu Jitsu without the necessary credentials. Our head instructor, Ian Rossiter, holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu awarded by Chico Mendes. Ian also has a 4th Dan in traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu and a 1st Kyu Brown Belt in Judo awarded by the British Judo Association.
