With a focus on traditional Chinese martial arts, the academy aims to promote healthy living while instilling discipline, self-confidence, and overall well-being in its students.
The academy offers classes in several Kung Fu styles that have been carefully selected from the founder's 40 years of training. These styles include Wing Chun, known for its highly effective close range fighting techniques such as the famous 1-inch punch. Praying Mantis is another style taught at the academy, known for its ferocious self-defence system that emphasises blinding speed and incredible strength. The academy also offers training in Choy Li Fut, a system that combines the devastating kicks of Northern Shaolin with the punching techniques of Southern Shaolin.
Additionally, students can learn Chang Chuan, which boasts powerful, courageous, and free-spirited techniques.
One of the most popular classes at Ringwood Martial Arts Academy is Chinese Kickboxing, an exciting form of aerobic and anaerobic cardio workout. It is one of the fastest-growing forms of exercise in the UK. Wutan Chinese Kickboxing combines the best techniques of self-defence with explosive punching, kicking, and wrestling skills derived from traditional Kung Fu. This class not only improves strength and fitness but also enhances self-confidence and overall well-being.
For those looking for a more meditative and gentle form of martial arts, the academy offers Tai Chi classes. Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese exercise suitable for adults of all ages. It improves fitness and health while serving as a profound martial art, a way to cultivate the intrinsic energy of the body (qi), and a form of meditation. Beginners start with the Yang style, which is considered the most suitable form for beginners.
Ringwood Martial Arts Academy also provides classes specifically tailored for juniors. The academy strongly believes that martial arts training can greatly benefit children in numerous ways. Classes for junior students take place on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Those interested in trying out a class are encouraged to get in touch with the academy.
The history of the academy dates back to 1966 when GrandMaster Liu Yun Qiao, the former head trainer to the bodyguards of the President Chiang Kai Shek, retired and created the school Wutan. Many highly skilled martial artists, several of whom were already teachers, joined Wutan under the guidance of GrandMaster Liu. Through the years, knowledge and skills were passed down from generation to generation, allowing the academy to develop a wealth of experience and knowledge in traditional martial arts.
Today, Ringwood Martial Arts Academy is led by senior instructor Matt, who has over six decades of Chinese martial arts knowledge. His dedication to continuous training sets him apart from many other instructors, allowing him to guide his students to reach their full potential. Alongside a team of experienced instructors, Matt leads classes at the academy with passion, expertise, and a dedication to passing on the rich traditions of Chinese martial arts.
