About

Rickmansworth Yoshinkan Aikido Club, located in Rickmansworth, is a martial arts school that specialises in the practise of Yoshinkan Aikido. Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that focuses on using the energy of one's opponent, rather than relying on strength or high kicks and punches. This makes Aikido accessible to men and women of all ages and physical abilities.

At Rickmansworth Yoshinkan Aikido Club, students of all levels are welcome to train in their Dojo. The club warmly welcomes beginners and encourages other dojos and martial arts to come and experience the unique practise of Yoshinkan Aikido.

The club boasts a team of highly skilled instructors who are dedicated to teaching and promoting Aikido. Andy Squires Sensei, a 3rd Dan, leads the team of instructors at Rickmansworth Yoshinkan Aikido Club. Mike Abel Sensei, a 2nd Dan, and Diane Hill Sensei, a 1st Dan, are also key members of the teaching staff. Together, they provide expert guidance and instruction, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded and enriching training experience.

The history of Aikido can be traced back to the 9th century in feudal Japan, where the aiki system of techniques was developed. Over the years, the art evolved and eventually reached Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of modern Aikido. Ueshiba Sensei developed Aikido as a way to avoid harm while not inflicting permanent injury on an aggressor. Soke Gozo Shioda, one of Ueshiba's students, played a significant role in the foundation of the Yoshinkan style of Aikido.

Shioda Sensei went on to establish the Yoshinkan Dojo and was awarded the rank of 9th Dan by Ueshiba Sensei himself.

The Rickmansworth Yoshinkan Aikido Club honours this rich history by continuing to teach and promote the Yoshinkan style of Aikido. The club is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive training environment for students to develop their skills, fitness, and mental well-being. In addition to being an effective self-defence practise, Aikido fosters harmony with one's opponent and surroundings.

Whether you are a beginner looking to start your Aikido journey or an experienced practitioner seeking further knowledge and development, Rickmansworth Yoshinkan Aikido Club offers a welcoming and inclusive community. Join them today and experience the unique blend of physical and mental training that Aikido has to offer.
