Rhythm Society for Performing Arts, located in Dehradun, is a distinguished non-profit and non-government organization dedicated to the nurturing and propagation of Indian classical performing arts. Founded in 2009 by acclaimed Kathak danseuse Ms. Namrata Rai, Rhythm Society has been actively promoting cultural heritage through various initiatives. With a steadfast mission to cultivate a deeper understanding of India’s diverse cultural traditions, the society operates under the artistic leadership of the world-renowned Tabla Maestro and Music Composer, Pt. Udhai Mazumdar.
Central to Rhythm Society's cultural activities is the annual festival “Smriti”, a four-day celebration held in memory of the late Dr. Madhukar Anand. Hosted in both New Delhi and Dehradun, "Smriti" serves as a vibrant platform where seasoned maestros and emerging artists converge to share and rejoice in the rich tapestry of Vedic arts and contemporary Indian performances. This festival not only fosters an appreciation for Indian classical music and dance but also aims to attract and engage new generations in these timeless art forms.
Beyond the festival, Rhythm Society is committed to continuous education and enrichment of Indian classical arts. The society operates teaching centers in Dehradun and New Delhi, where students regularly receive guidance and knowledge from esteemed maestros in various disciplines. This nurturing environment allows budding artists to connect deeply with their cultural heritage and acquire a comprehensive understanding of the inter-connectivity between different classical traditions.
As Rhythm Society celebrated its 15th year in 2023, the introduction of the "Abhyāsa" project brought further depth to its educational endeavors. Through masterclasses conducted by maestros across different genres, students gain a profound insight into the complexities and nuances of classical dance and its interplay with other performing arts. This initiative underscores Rhythm Society’s dedication to fostering inspiration, innovation, and creativity among the new generation, ensuring the perpetuation and evolution of India's classical performing arts heritage.
