“Reading Women's Self Defence” is a martial arts school located in Reading, New Zealand. With a mission to empower women and promote personal safety, their classes offer a unique combination of practical self-defence techniques and behaviour-changing practises.

The school prides itself on creating a fun and friendly learning environment where students can gain confidence, learn to protect themselves, and have a great time. The instructors take a holistic approach to self-defence, focusing not only on physical techniques but also on changing everyday behaviours to ensure maximum safety in various situations.

In each two-hour class, students can expect an instructor-guided warm-up, stretching exercises, and a cool-down session. The classes also incorporate a segment called “safe falling and recovery”, which teaches students how to fall safely and quickly recover from slips or pushes. This ensures that students are prepared to react effectively if faced with unexpected situations.

The school encourages students to dress comfortably in loose-fitting attire that can withstand some physical movement. While the classes address serious topics, the instructors maintain a friendly and supportive atmosphere to put students at ease.

The eight-week course offered by Reading Women's Self Defence costs 50 if paid in advance, or 60 if paid on the night. Each week, the syllabus focuses on various physical techniques to handle different types of attacks and situations. Students will learn essential skills such as escaping grabs from the front and behind, basic striking and kicking, distancing and timing, dealing with and disarming weapons, striking vulnerable points, escaping from the floor, and using the environment to their advantage. They will also learn how everyday objects can be used as improvised weapons.

Classes will be held every Tuesday from January 31st, 2023, to March 21st, 2023, at the Maiden Place Community Centre in Earley, Reading. The centre is conveniently located at 1 Maiden Place, Earley, Reading RG6 3HD.
