Rapaki Track is one of the most popular tracks in the Port Hills of Christchurch, New Zealand, attracting walkers, runners, and mountain bikers alike. Located at the junction of Rapaki Road and Centaurus Road in the suburb of Hillsborough, this track offers stunning views of Lyttelton Harbour from the top.
The track stretches for approximately 3. 5 kilometres and takes about 45 minutes to complete one way. Dogs are welcome on the track but must be kept on a leash at all times. Parking is available in the wider area, with alternative options being Hansen Park or Fifield Terrace.
Visiting these areas before starting the Rapaki Track can serve as a warm-up, as visitors can enjoy a stroll along the Heathcote River.
Starting at the junction of Rapaki Road and Centaurus Road, the track gradually climbs, providing pleasant views of the valley below. In the mid-section, it flattens out before ascending again at a good gradient towards the Rapaki Track car park, which is located on Summit Road. This car park marks the end of vehicle access along Summit Road and is a popular spot for resting and admiring the breathtaking views of Lyttelton Harbour and the volcanic peaks and ridges of Banks Peninsula.
For those looking to extend their journey, a 10-minute walk-up to the summit of Mount Vernon is highly recommended. From there, visitors can return the same way they came or create a longer loop walk by taking the Huntsbury Track. For a more challenging adventure, visitors can also explore a section of the Crater Rim Walkway in either direction from this point.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on Rapaki Track, visitors are encouraged to use the “Plan My Walk” feature provided by the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council. This helpful tool offers track alerts, weather forecasts, trip reviews, and a packing list, ensuring that visitors are well-prepared for their adventure.
Please note that during the winter months, the track can become wet and slippery, so caution is advised. For any further inquiries or assistance, visitors can contact the Christchurch City Council at 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169, or visit one of their service centres.
Rapaki Track is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers, offering a picturesque and invigorating experience amid the beauty of Christchurch's Port Hills.
