Frampton on Severn Sailing Club, known for its exciting Racing Club, invites all sailing enthusiasts to join their weekly sailing events. Every Sunday and Wednesday afternoon, as well as on Wednesday evenings from spring to autumn, the club organises thrilling and competitive races for all those with a penchant for the sport.
In the class racing category, various boat classes, including Lasers, Solos, and Handicap fleet, compete against each other in separate fleets, making for an exhilarating and diverse range of races.
For those who prefer a challenging mix of boats, handicap racing offers an exciting opportunity. This category sees boats of all classes starting together, with their times recorded over a set course. The Portsmouth Yardstick handicapping system is then used to calculate the average lap time, providing a fair competition for all participants. The results are ranked from the lowest to highest average time, ensuring that each boat, regardless of its speed or class, has a chance to win.
Pursuit racing, another thrilling category, adds an element of strategy. With staggered starts based on boat classes, slower classes start before faster ones. Each class sails for a time equivalent to half their Club Number in minutes, and all boats finish at the same time. The race results are based on the positions of the boats on the water, creating a thrilling spectacle for participants and spectators alike.
The club also values the participation of younger members and offers dedicated races for juniors. Held during the summer and autumn months, these “miniseries” encourage junior sailors to get involved in dinghy racing. Juniors will sail on the same course as the club racers, but they will have their own race with separate prizes. With on-the-water coaching and assistance permitted, this program aims to foster the enthusiasm and skills of junior sailors, paving the way for their future success in club racing.
Furthermore, the club recognises the importance of supporting those who are new to racing. The Rookie Races, conducted concurrently with the club racing, provide a platform for newcomers who may not yet be confident in their skills. These races have a dedicated start and shorter duration, allowing beginners to gain experience and receive on-the-water coaching and assistance.
Frampton on Severn Sailing Club welcomes all keen sailors to participate in their diverse and exciting racing events. So come and join us for an incredible sailing experience filled with competition, camaraderie, and the sheer thrill of the sport.
