Welcome to Purley Bury Croquet Club, located at 53 Purley Bury Avenue in Purley, Surrey. Affiliated with the Croquet Association and established in 1990, our club offers both Association Croquet and Golf Croquet to players of all ages. With approximately 100 members, including 60 active players and 40 social members, we provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for both beginners and experienced players.
Croquet is a delightful outdoor sport that combines ball skills and tactics, making it an enjoyable and sociable game. Whether you're new to the sport or an advanced player, our club is open to all enthusiasts. For those interested in starting from scratch, we offer a brief introduction to the game and its benefits. Croquet can be played in two principal forms Association and Golf. Association Croquet is a game of intricate strategy, similar to snooker or pool, while Golf Croquet is quick to learn but requires accuracy and tactical thinking. Both forms can be played as singles or doubles, and many players enjoy participating in both styles, as skills acquired in one are transferrable to the other.
Croquet utilises an effective handicap system that values smart thinking as much as physical skill, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance of winning. While the best players often begin at a young age, many enthusiasts take up the sport after retiring from more physically demanding activities. Croquet can be as competitive as you desire, with advanced players taking the game seriously, but most of our club members view it as a relaxing and friendly way to spend an afternoon.
Our club features two croquet courts available for use from April to the end of September. We cater to players of all levels, from beginners to experts, through regular friendly play, internal competitions, and participation in regional competitions. In addition to our sporting activities, we have a vibrant social programme with various events throughout the year, providing opportunities for members to connect and enjoy their time off the court.
