Prattens Bowls Club, located in Radstock's Charlton Lane, is a warm and friendly club that has been established since 1930. Affiliated to both Bowls England and Somerset Bowls Association, the club prides itself on providing a welcoming atmosphere for bowlers of all experience levels.
Visitors interested in joining Prattens Bowls Club are encouraged to attend Club Night, held every Monday from 6 pm onwards. This is a great opportunity to meet club members and have a chat about the game of bowls. For those new to the sport, coaching is available free of charge at a time that suits them, with equipment available for borrowing. Additionally, new bowlers enjoy free membership for their first year.
The club's history dates back to its founding by Mr Thomas, a cashier at F Pratten & Co Ltd. Initially, two rinks were laid in October 1928, followed by a third rink in July 1931. All the work to lay and maintain the rinks was carried out through voluntary labour. In 1937, the club played 37 matches, winning 20, losing 16, and drawing 1, against opponents such as MSN Catholic, Wincanton, and St Keyna.
Over the years, the club continued to expand and make improvements. A fourth rink was laid in 1948 using turf from Westbury, and a fifth rink was added in 1960 using grass seed. Initially, playing for the Bowls Club required being employed by F Pratten, and members wore a green blazer purchased through instalments. The club also lacked a pavilion, with players changing and having teas in the Sports Club.
However, in 1960, a pavilion was built by L Turner and Harold Shearn, using timber supplied by the company. This pavilion lasted nearly 40 years before being replaced in 1997.
Prattens Bowls Club, which is part of the Prattens Westfield Amateur Sports Club, used to include cricket and football teams as well. Now, the club participates in various friendly and league matches, including men's, ladies, and mixed matches. They also hold competitions within the club and take part in Somerset and national competitions. All club members are eligible to play for the Somerset Patrons team.
For more information, visitors can check out the club's website and social media presence, including their Facebook page. They can also find details regarding home fixtures, news, and club contacts. Whether an experienced bowler or a complete novice, Prattens Bowls Club offers a friendly community for all those interested in the great game of bowls.
