Powerday Hooks Amateur Boxing Club, based in London, is a highly successful and voluntary sporting club that has been in existence for over 10 years. Connected to the London Borough of Ealing and surrounding communities, the club is a proud member of the National Governing Body England Boxing. Powerday Hooks ABC caters to all genders and ethnic sections of the community, making it an inclusive and diverse club.
The club was formed in response to the evident demand and need for the sport of boxing among young people in Ealing. The generous support of Mick and Ed Crossan of Powerday, along with some investment from the Local Ward Forums, facilitated the refurbishment of the club's facilities. Head Coach Steve Newland, who founded Hooks Boxing ABC, has dedicated over a decade of his life to the club, providing young people in the community with the benefits that boxing can offer. The sport promotes discipline, respect, and serves as a deterrent against gang and street crime culture.
Powerday Hooks ABC has an impressive track record, having won 37 National Boxing titles since its foundation in 2009. The club has been recognised as London's most successful school-age boxing club for the past two seasons, and the second most successful in the country. James DeGale, a former pupil and boxer at Hooks ABC, went on to win Olympic and World Titles, becoming a household name in the boxing world. DeGale has publicly praised Head Coach Steve Newland's guidance and the positive impact he had on his boxing career and personal development.
The club recently gained access to its own “Home Base” at the Popes Lane Gym in Ealing. With the support of sponsors Powerday, the London Borough of Ealing, Ealing Common Ward, South Acton Ward Forums, and Old Actonians Sports Club, the club has upgraded its facilities to create a modern and fit-for-purpose space for boxing and sporting activities. The club is open to individuals and groups who wish to access the facilities and equipment outside of club and organised classes, subject to agreement.
Powerday Hooks ABC is a well-structured organisation, managed by an Executive Committee. The club operates as a not-for-profit constituted voluntary sports club, ensuring good governance practises. The Executive Committee is composed of volunteers who bring a wide range of skill sets to the management of the club. The club's governance and operations are guided by a Club Constitution.
Powerday Hooks Amateur Boxing Club prides itself on delivering positive experiences and interventions for its participants and members. The club values the role of sports in enhancing health and mental well-being, particularly among young people. The club provides a safe and inclusive environment that fosters growth, personal development, and a sense of belonging.
