The Porlock Weir Gig Club, located in Minehead, is a renowned rowing club that offers the thrilling experience of pilot gig rowing on the Exmoor coast. Founded in 2018 by Ben Allerton, the club aims to meet the growing demand for this traditional sport in the region. Starting with a training gig borrowed from the rival Boscastle Pilot Gig Club, the club quickly gained traction and now boasts a membership of over 40 individuals and continues to grow.
Situated on the picturesque West Somerset coast, Porlock Weir serves as the perfect backdrop for gig rowing. The club has two main gigs, namely Circe and Goose. Circe was purchased in December 2018 and arrived in January 2019 after being gifted to the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA) from Nankersey. Goose, on the other hand, was built by Andrew Nancarrow and was delivered to the club in October 2020.
It was subsequently launched in July 2021.
The Porlock Weir Gig Club has also made a name for itself through its participation in various events and championships. In May 2022, the club attended its first World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly and achieved great success. The dedicated team of rowers and their impressive achievements reflect the passion and commitment of the club members.
Pilot Gigs have a rich history and are governed by the CPGA, ensuring that all gigs are constructed to be practically identical. The Cornish Pilot Gig is traditionally built using Cornish Narrow Leaf Elm and is 32 feet long with a beam of four feet ten inches. These gigs were initially used as general work boats and for transporting pilots to incoming vessels off the Atlantic. The Pilots from the Scilly Isles earned a reputation for being exceptionally skilled, often being the first to board vessels in distress and guide them safely to their destinations.
